“The philosophy of fasting calls upon us to know ourselves, to master ourselves, and to discipline ourselves the better to free ourselves. To fast is to identify our dependencies, and free ourselves from them.” (Tariq Ramadan)

Fasting is a wealth of wisdom.

It is one of those experiences that will teach you something new, every single time you practice it.

Here is a list of the major lessons that I have learned from my own personal experience:

1. Desire and craving have a strong pull.

You are largely controlled by both desire and craving within your daily life.

Fasting largely helps you to practice the detachment from that desire or craving.

2. Food is the master and we are the slaves.

Much of our day consists of thinking about food and optimizing for its consumption.

This is the natural consequence of a culture that has grossly ignored the wise practice of the fast.
