Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, “It might have been.” (Kurt Vonnegut)

Firstly, what are the top 5 regrets of the dying? They consist of the following:

  1. “I wish I had the courage to live a life true to myself.”
  2. “I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.”
  3. “I wish I had the courage to express my feelings.”
  4. “I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.”
  5. “I wish I had let myself be happier.”

These are the five most prevalent regrets of the dying.

Later on in this post, we will discuss how we can avoid feeling regret within this context.

For now, let’s discuss the topic of regret at a much broader perspective.

Regret

Regret is defined as the feeling of sadness, repentance, or disappointment over something that has happened, been done, or hasn’t happened.

This is an important definition to understand because if we can define what regret specifically is then we can move ourselves much closer to the opposite direction of where that would be.

Regret can occur over something that has happened.
